Happy Thursday.
The build this week: the Navy awarded a combined $76.6 billion across HII and General Dynamics Electric Boat for 14 nuclear submarines and shipyard infrastructure.
Underneath: Paducah's $100 billion energy campus, a $1.5 billion plasma plant, Ohio's 1.06 GWh battery, and a $20 million telematics round.

The Lead
The award covers five additional Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarines, nine additional Block VI Virginia-class attack submarines, and other funding for shipyard infrastructure. The total runs across HII's Newport News Shipbuilding division and General Dynamics Electric Boat. It is the production commitment the two-yard submarine enterprise has been waiting for.
Newport News now has a defined role across both programs. HII will serve as delivery yard for six of the planned Virginia-class boats. On Columbia, the yard will build and deliver six major module sections for each submarine. HII and Electric Boat have already built and delivered 26 Virginia-class boats together.
Nuclear-submarine construction depends on a small pool of welders, pipefitters, designers, nuclear trades, specialized facilities, and long-lead suppliers. The Congressional Research Service counts roughly 16,000 suppliers across the submarine industrial base. A multiboat run gives Newport News and that network a clearer basis for hiring, training, tooling, supplier orders, and capital projects than annual uncertainty can provide.
The award also locks together the Navy's two urgent undersea needs. Columbia replaces the Ohio-class boats that carry the sea-based leg of the nuclear deterrent. Virginia supplies the attack submarines the fleet uses for surveillance, strike, and undersea warfare. Building both at once makes production capacity in Hampton Roads and New England a strategic constraint.
The $76.6 billion is the combined Navy value, not HII's individual share. The contracts also do not erase schedule pressure. The Navy's current budget material projects the lead Columbia boat 12 to 18 months behind its original delivery target.
Still, this is a long production runway for Newport News. The region can now measure the award in trained workers, supplier throughput, completed modules, and submarines delivered over the next decade.
